Steamlander™

For those who may have missed earlier posts hinting at it: The Caledon Forums is moving to Steamlander™, a more inclusive site for the Lands of Steam™. The original http://www.CaledonForums.com will soon begin is now forwarding to http://www.steamlander.com/ as we rearrange the site to make members of other virtual world Steampunk and Steampunk Victorian communities feel welcome here.

Although we some day hope to use this site as a springboard to our own approach to creating a 3D virtual world, we are not abandoning Second Life® -- whose creators have earned their place in history by making the first successful "metaverse" inspired by stories such as Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash". Nor are we abandoning Desmond Shang's Independent State of Caledon -- whose example has inspired other Steampunk Victorian communities in Second Life®.

Desmond Shang is a dear friend whose advice and moral support has been invaluable in creating this site. What is more, the micro-economy, virtual real estate, and novice accessible 3D modeling tools of Second Life® have changed our expectations as to what is possible, forever. I hope to create a 3D world compelling enough to interest the likes of Desmond Shang, and provide friendly competition to the creators of Second Life® (who knows -- if I come up with something really good, maybe they would want to license it?).

In the mean time, please forgive the mild chaos as I move things around, and re-brand everything for my new trademarks, Steamlander™, and Lands of Steam™, and comb through the board looking for references to Caledon Forums which should now reflect our new identity.

Apologies to anyone who may have had their visit disrupted a few minutes ago as I moved some cookie and domain settings around. Although OpenID implementation which will allow this to become a truly dynamic portal is a good week or so away, once implemented the primary point of access for the site will be http://www.steamlander.com. Rather than wait until most of the Caledon Forums members had new forums.steamlander.com cookies in place, I decided it made more sense to change to www sooner than later.

This is looking great, Excalibur! And I think everyone will agree that it serves the larger community far better this way. Wow, have the years rolled along and times have changed!

I wish you all the best with these updates, and I'll certainly be around myself to be a part of it.
